I measured acutance on Epson V700 and V750 models. While I could set the pixel resolution up to as high as 4800 ppi, there was no gain in actual resolution at any setting over 3200 ppi ... actual acutance for both was in the 2600-2800 ppi category. Good enough for a lot of work, but since all scanning is done through glass with these flatbed units, film scanners give a crisper, more detailed rendering. Both the Minolta Scan Dual II (nominally 2820 ppi) and Nikon Coolscan IV ED (nominally 2900 ppi) returned acutance at their rated pixel resolution, much sharper than the Epson V700. This is easily attributable to the focusing lenses in these units as well as their film holders and lack of glass in the scanning path. I posted these comparisons once upon a time ... maybe they're still up in some corner of my webserver. I'll see if I can find them. -- Godfrey godfreydigiorgi.posterous.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
