The short spiral cable is only 3 ft long, right? Why not just use the
in-camera wireless capability, if that's how far off-camera you're
going? Save your money for lenses! :)
My ttl cord is 6 ft, has the hotshoe connections built-in, and
available on amazon for about $40. I'm not sure I understand why the
3-pc set is more versatile... What kind of jacks are on the hotshoe
adaptors? Would they be used for anything other than the f5p ttl
cord? Could you use a (pc or 1/8") sync cord to connect to manual
off-camera flash with these?
The main selling point is versatility.
I have one pair of Pentax Adapter F (Camera) /Hotshoe Adapter F (flash)
[forgive me if I get the names a little mixed up] connected with the
short curly cable. The Hotshoe Adapter F is semi-permanently mounted on
a Stroboframe Pro-T bracket.
I have a second pair Adapter F/Hotshoe Adapter F connected by the short
curly cable. In this case the short cable serves mainly to keep all the
parts together in one place.
I have two of the 20' F5P cables that I can use if I want to mount my
strobes out on a light stand.
I can connect the flash end of the long cables directly to the AF-500FTZ
and AF-540FGZ. I can mount the AF-200FG or AF-360FGZ on the Hotshoe
Adapter F.
Using the long cable I don't have to worry about whether the "wireless"
flash can see the "wireless" trigger built in to the on-board flash.
I already had one Adapter F/Hotshoe Adapter F & F5P cable when the local
Wolf Camera went out of business. No one else wanted Pentax stuff and I
picked up a bunch of it for nickles and dimes.
When I use a radio trigger, I'm usually using a Vivatar 285HV on a
light-weight light stand.
If anyone remembers my baseball peso from last summer, that's the light
barely visible over on the right side edge of the image.

The flash is basically set to balance the light on the family in the
foreground with the light on the playing field. I could clone it out,
but I don't think anyone has ever really noticed that it's there until I
tell them.
