An image editor for me doesn't have to be fancy. I'm really, honestly,
mostly happy with iPhoto.
But I've really come to like the curves control. And I miss unsharp
mask. iPhoto and Aperture only have "sharpen."
I don't usually use unsharp mask. I sharpen by creating a duplicate
layer & applying a high-pass filter. Crank the filter up until the edges
have the definition you want, then change the screen mode for the layer
to "soft light" (... hard light, multiply or screen as suits your taste).
You can do as many of these layers as you want with different levels of
sharpening and use layer masks to confine the effect to the part of the
image you want to have that level of sharpening.
