I think my next "big" purchase will probably be Aperture, I'm really

One question. Right now I'm using iPhoto for captioning and keywording
and archiving. When an iPhoto library gets too big I put it on an
external harddrive and start a new library. Then if I need a photo
from the old library I can access it right off the ext hd.

Some of the stuff I've read seems to say that's not possible with Aperture?

How do you handle Aperture libraries that are too big?

since i store all my image files by reference (not embedded into the library), the library file is a manageable size, for me at least; i currently have all my Pentax photos (about 18,000) and some assorted other projects in a single library; i use 1280x1280/medium as my preview settings (previews are a large part of the space the library consumes, when the images aren't embedded) and my library is just under 20GB

Aperture supports moving or offlining images on a project by project (or image by image) basis within libraries, so you can spread the photos in one library over various locations and rearrange storage at will
