Going by my "pie" recipe book, about 1/3rd of the mass of pastry is fat. According to my nutrition book, fat has just over double the calories per weight compared to either carbohydrate or protein. So yes, pastry should definitely be eaten in moderation. A good way to do this is to make it yourself. It's just labour-intensive enough to make you think twice about having it. It also teaches you what goes into it, and thus how bad it really is for you. But it beats the store-bought stuff hands down. I've been wanting to find one of those ornate fluted game-pie moulds but new ones are very expensive and I haven't found a second hand one yet.
