Why use anything other than Adobe Camera Raw?

You're already using the Adobe conversion engine if you're using
Photoshop Elements 5.0 as your image editor; it just makes sense
to use the same RAW conversion engine to generate preview JPEGs.

You can also get what is called a "Windows Shell Extension" that
lets you see thumbnails for PEFs (and DNGs, and Canon RAW files)
in the regular Windows File Browser

I've been using this ever since I got my *ist-D back in 2003.
