Hah!

Even at current US fuel prices, my tire (sic) costs are of the same
order of magnitude as my fuel costs. I average around 22 mpg, so 1000
miles costs me around $175 at $3.85/gallon. I need fresh rubber maybe
as often as once every 12,000 miles ($2100 in fuel costs). While a
complete set of tyres isn't *quite* that expensive, it's well into
four figures (performance run-flats don't come cheap). As there's
only one manufacturer making approved tyres, I'm pretty much stuck
unless I want to risk costly arguments with my insurance company.

Fortunately I don't do a lot of miles, so a set of tyres lasts me
around three years.
