I'd like to have a vertical 24" (or bigger) display for editing portrait format

display would be just fine for rough editing of photos, and I could everything but
the final polish on the secondary display.
On the off chance that someone else on the list has faced this same issue, any
recommendations? hints? warnings?
i have a used Apple 24" Cinema Display HD that i bought a couple years
ago; it came without a stand so it was cheaper than usual, but i
intended from the start to put it on an Ergotron VESA arm so it can be
rotated at will; Mac OS X supports rotation explicitly -- you can also
rotate the image without rotating the physical display; i've used mine
in portrait orientation for a few days at time; it gets frustrating to
look at landscape photos on a portrait screen
i also have an older laptop that is my server; attached is a Samsung
SyncMaster 2343bwx that is 23" and 16:9 but has slightly more pixels
than 1080p; it is a low-end TN panel (cost under $200 new) but i
generally like its color and have used it for rough edits without major
problems; i have it in permanent portrait orientation, without a stand
if this is a long-term investment i'd suggest an IPS panel with LED
backlight and a VESA arm; if it's a quick fix, i'd go cheap and find a
non-IPS monitor with a rotating stand
