My first thought was the father should be in trouble.
The thief is the only person responsible for stealing the car and the
children.
Thing is - a few cases were people leaving infants / young children in
their locked cars in the direct sunlight and the children died from
either hypothermia or in some cases carbon monoxide poisoning... but
some of the punishment handed out in some cases seem extreme for what is
basically stupidity on the parents part.
It used to be quite common for people leave their children alone for a few
minutes, but now everyone is scared of shadows, but complains when their
children grow up fat and with no sense of responsibility or adventure.
There was a case a few years ago of a woman from Norway, I believe, who was
prosecuted in New York for leaving her baby in a pram outside a shop when
she went in for a couple of minutes to buy something. It runed out that this
is normal for Norway, where people seem to have a more balanced idea about
these things.

It was a restaurant... very close to where I live - it was a toddler -
part of the restaurant is outside.. and slightly fenced in - but you
have to go inside to pay for the meal. In that instance, it was really
stupid that she got in trouble... but also rather dense of her. I'm
pretty sure the charges were dropped.
It was surprising that the article didn't mention the parent getting
into any hot water over it... I figure they considered the dog was
protection - which, it turns out, he was.

Har... I had the same at work... bunch of underexposed burglars made
off with a bunch of TFTs after unsuccessfully trying to - EPIC FAIL -
extract cash from a postage printing machine which of course contains
none but they broke the whole thing to smithereens in their search of
the cash box... police just followed their footprints in the fresh
snow to their home... plus they still had part of the loot from the
last two break-ins into our office. After that miraculously it never
happened again... =)
What I really want to know is, when will dad be tried for neglecting
his kids? I mean leaving them in a car unattended with the engine
running is more than an invitation to child abduction and worse...

There seems to be a rash of totally inept criminals lately. They
pop
up on the morning news here at least once a week. Where the heck
are
today's Lex Luthors?
They're certainly not here.

they'll still have to add it to the cold case file though...
