It brought out a lot of cyan because auto-levels tries to create
an image that averages out to a uniform grey. You've got a lot
of yellow in that shot, so it compensates by shifiting everything
away from yellow (i.e. towards cyan).
Unless I'm trying to fix a colour cast, I'll generally use "auto
contrast" rather than "auto levels" for just that reason.
Thanks for that tip! I'll be sure to use it in the future. It didn't
occur to me that the leveling might work the way you describe it, but it
certainly makes sense.
I'm starting to get a little more comfortable with GIMP, finally, and
with any luck I'll be able to use it in a manner somewhat approaching
that for which it was intended -- before I die.
