I don't believe I've ever encountered this problem with my K-5, which
operates only on Pentax batteries -- two at a time, because I always
use the grip, and I charge the batteries more often than needed. I
did experience occasional shutdowns with my K20D, in which I used a
variety of third party batteries. As with your experience, the K20D
shutdowns were resolved by turning the camera off and back on. One or
two of my third party batteries eventually failed in full. Paul

I have noticed on both the K10D & K20D with battery grips that when the camera is set to use the battery in the grip first, it does not automatically switch over to the battery in the camera when the battery in the grip runs down.

I have to run the battery in the grip down until the battery level indicator shows a blinking low battery symbol, then turn the camera off. When I turn the camera back on the battery level indicator will show the status of the battery in the camera. Usually the battery in the camera shows no more than half charge at that point.

I do not know if this behavior is characteristic of all K10D & K20D cameras or peculiar to the two examples I have, although based on the posts to this thread, I suspect it is common to all.

I also noticed on the K10D that if the battery selection is set to Auto, the battery level indicator will display the symbol for full charge until immediately before it starts blinking and the camera shuts itself off. The K20D may do same, but I set it to use the battery in the grip first as soon as I got it.
