The diesel, although bigger than 1300cc and heavier, gets 60-80mpg(imp) but the only market for cars like this is outside the USA. Part of this will be due to the enhanced safety designing causing the door apertures to be made smaller and therefore making it difficult for larger people to enter.

The cost to get existing diesels to meet current U. S. emission rules is extremely cost prohibitive.

I attended a Ford meeting where the additional cost to get a recent, in production, Ford diesel to meet those rules cost somewhere around $2000 USD IIRC, - this was for the hardware in the exhaust system, from the engine outlet ports to the tip of the tailpipe and the requisite components in that system.
