First of all, let me say that when it comes to being intuitively obvious and
easy to use indesign sucks.

starting from scratch with InDesign for a non-trivial project is a worst-case scenario; it would probably be worth working through a video tutorial or book after this to see behind some of the issues you encountered

sorry i didn't have time to look it over earlier; i looked at version 4 and it's a pleasing layout; the juxtapositions are a little corny at times, but they also illustrate your thought process in a very direct way, so you've succeeded in putting yourself into the book and had fun ... and not bad for a first InDesign job

technical notes: i worry about the bleed — you need to actually extend backgrounds and photos beyond the margin to get a bleed to work, and i can't tell that you've done that; if you have, some of your text may be too close to the edge

i think i see different shades of black in the backgrounds, so maybe you've tackled this, but use caution butting "blackish" areas of photos against a black background — generally a "rich" black will bet better in such cases
