Sort of a sad story, but not really. If you don't care about vintage
audio and vinyl, click out now. :-)
About two years ago I bought a vintage 'pristine' Technics turntable
for my son from an eBay seller. I had contacted him via eBay to ask
several questions (not regarding a listed item). We transacted the
deal outside of eBay. It was close to $500 for a pristine SL-5300.
Well it didn't work at all on the auto functions.
i'm a non-purist and a devoted cheapie, but i still have a bunch of records
(and an intention to digitize a few of them eventually); i have an old Denon
turntable whose auto mode isn't quite right, but very nice otherwise, and i'm a
manual guay; also an old cheapo Technics linear-tracking unit which we use most
because it is so compact it fits by the main receiver; i also recently spent
$15 on a belt for my dad's old Dual 505-2, a very nice turntable that a
relative will use
if i needed another TT i suppose i'd consider something minimalist like Rega,
but i'd probably just find something workable locally, since shipping a
delicate item bumps the already considerable eBay risk level above my tolerance
