They did a similar kind of thing here a while back: reduced the hospital 
waiting lists by kicking people off then tried to claim political credit for 
the improved stats.  I don't remember the specifics but it wasn't well received.

The surprise for me is that I thought that Australians treat their senior 
citizens very well.
