Sometimes flash works, but mostly, it just sucks.
Like those "flash cubes" for the old 110 and 126 instamatics. :-) You
could hold one in your hand, and use a finger or thumb nail to release a
little wire on the base and fire the bulbs one by one.
OK, you folks will "get" this.
When I was a kid, my dad was heavily into photography. He had a
stupefying array of different flash bulbs for different camera and flash
systems. We're about to go on vacation, or Christmas is coming up or
something. Anyway, Dad needs "batteries and bulbs" (euphemism for a
paper bag full of various batteries, bulbs, roasted peanuts, caramels,
Mary Janes, 0.22LR rounds, Hoppes #9, and stuff). We load the family up
and go to the local K-Mart department store. Get Dad's selection of
stuff, pay our tab, and head toward the car. We're leaving the store
four-abreast, my brother on the left, my mom, my dad, and me on the
right. We get maybe 30 feet out the door and, out of the corner of my
eye, I see my dad's front pants pocket "brighten". About three seconds
later, Dad is dancing quite the little jig! He'd put a collection of
coins, pocket knife, batteries, and "live" flash bulbs in the same
pocket. At some point, enough things connected, and three of the bulbs
went off at once, vaporizing their tungsten, and creating quite a bit of
heat in the process. It took about two weeks for Dad's blisters to heal.
