It does look more like a medium format killer rather than a D700 replacement. I hope that Pentax/Ricoh has an updated 645D with higher sensor resolution waiting in the wings. 30mp is getting might close to the 40mp sensor in low end MF DSLRs.

Nikon confirms 36.3 megapixel D800

Saw it on dpreview.com this AM. I'm curious about the quality
difference between the 800& 800E (which bypasses the anti-aliasing
filter).
What's curious is that it doesn't seem to be a replacement for the
D700 (moderate but adequate resolution and killer high-ISO capability)
but rather an ultra-high-resolution-above-all camera. Not that there's
anything wrong with that if it's your game but it does leave D700
owners with nowhere to upgrade to. (Unless there's another camera on
the way, which is probably likely...)

Don't lose heart! They might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
lengthily search.
