IMHO there is no focal length that is useless and there is no focal
length that is good for only certain types of photography.

Even "portraiture" as a category is often painted with a broad brush.
Do you think that cutting off the top of the head is "bad" in your
photography? If you look at some examples, you'll see that many
powerful images are made doing just that. Other times we think we have
to show the person/people from head-to-toe, and really that can often
make the most boring sort of photo.

I recommend taking a look at the images created with a particular
focal length and camera combo on Pentax Photo Gallery to get an idea
(or inspiration) as to what kind of images can be made and ask
yourself whether it is the lens' focal length that is the problem or
maybe the way that you are confining yourself to using it.

You can go to PPG and search for images based upon lens (and/or camera
combo). There are lots of different 50s to compare. There are also
Flickr groups like "Nifty Fifty!" that are only for images created
with a 50mm lens (though you will need to check and see if the images
you like were created with a full frame or APS-C (or other) to compare
apples-to-apples with your camera.

In general, I think that people like the 50 for it's slightly
telephoto (on crop cameras) combined with its shallow depth of field
when wide open (whether that be 1.2, 1.4, 1.7, 1.8, or 2.0). If that's
not the look you are going for, then perhaps you really don't "need"
it.
