Walt, just for grins I fed that shot to Lightroom and applied an over-the-top local-contrast-enhancing preset I cooked up (it basically applies 500% Clarity). Also reduced the exposure .5 stop, and a bunch of Recovery to rescue some detail in the sky (upper-left). Lastly NR and edge sharpening.
It is almost certainly taking things too far, but it might give you ideas.
