Very cool, Bruce!

While I went in a completely different direction, that captures the grit (as you aptly put it) I was looking for very well! I can't help wondering if bumping up the contrast in-camera would yield good results, or if I'd be better off leaving it to post-processing.

I'm going to dig around the web for good contrast-specific plug-ins to see if I can come up with anything useful.

Thanks for the ideas!

Walt, just for grins I fed that shot to Lightroom and applied an
over-the-top local-contrast-enhancing preset I cooked up (it basically
applies 500% Clarity). Also reduced the exposure .5 stop, and a bunch
of Recovery to rescue some detail in the sky (upper-left). Lastly NR
and edge sharpening.

It is almost certainly taking things too far, but it might give you
ideas. It really brings out the grit ...

You really should preserve it from an untimely fate. It's a great subject.

Thanks, Jack.

It was in fact shot from the shaded side, though it was a pretty overcast
day. I'm not seeing the mossy hue, though I'm using a completely
uncalibrated monitor, so that would explain why.

I really should bring the thing inside just to make sure I still have it
to work with in the future as an ongoing project. It would really suck if a
storm blew it over and broke the glass. It's amazing that it hasn't happened
before now, come to think of it.

It would make a nice detail shot, but I see it as slightly dark.

Subject: PESO: Traveler's Lantern

Here's a shot of an old coal oil lantern I took the other day while doing
yard work. It's old and rusted and would probably be a decent subject in the
hands of someone who's particularly adept at subtle HDR -- which I'm not.
So, I figured I'd convert it over to a monochrome and give it a platinum
process look, ad some grain and bump the contrast a bit.

For some reason, Flickriver is showing a little .jpg link icon right in
the middle of the photos at the moment, so I used the Flickr lightbox
display. Here's the normal flickr display for those who don't get along with
the lightbox.

Comments, critiques and suggestions welcome. I tend to have a heavy hand
with filters and such, so if there's something that I could be doing to
improve my images in that respect, please let me know.

Thanks!
