I think that the single biggest thing Pentax could do to sell
more cameras is to get them into stores where people can buy them.
Well, yeah. But that's a little like saying the best way to become
rich is to make lots of money. It's true, but doesn't provide much
helpful information about how to accomplish the task.

So the question becomes... why DOESN'T Pentax have a high-end presence
in Costco, Walmart, Best Buy, and other nationwide brick and mortar
stores? Just about the only retail presence I see is camera shops,
which typically are selling at close to MSRP, and which get a small
fraction of the traffic the above mentioned stores receive.
It's even rare for me to even see a Pentax P&S on sale here.

According to my local independent pusher, Southeastern Camera, Pentax
won't sell to them. They used to be a Pentax dealer; stocked Pentax at
about the same level they stocked Nikon. But Pentax cut 'em off about
the time the K10D came out.
They finally had to tell me that Pentax refused to fill the order and if
I wanted one, I was going to have to order from B&H.
Wolf Camera was still around then and several local stores had the
K100D, but even they couldn't get the K10D in stock. They did offer to
order it from Pentax, but I didn't have any more confidence they could
get it than my local independent, plus their price was higher than what
Southeastern had quoted (which was only a couple dollars more than B&H's
price).
I did get my K20D from Southeastern, but that was a kit someone traded
in when they switched to Nikon. I've seen a couple of used K-7's around,
and for a while the TigerDirect (now CompUSA) retail store here in
Raleigh had the K-x storm-trooper model.
For a lark I just checked their website (CompUSA) and they have the K-5
for $1349.99 with free shipping [listed as Pentax 14762 Digital SLR
Camera] and *In Stock*. I know they don't have it in the store, because
I was in there this morning.
