G'day all
Silver Exfex Pro is a well-regarded Photoshop filter to help with black
and
white conversions. This is a legal download that might be useful to
some,
but there are a couple of gotchas:
1. It's Version 1
2. You have to register with Nik software, so you can expect to receive
the
odd email promotion in the future.
3. It's not a stand-alone program. You must have Photoshop or (I
think)
Lightroom.
4. The download promotion is in German which, of course, is OK if you
are
fluent in German. If not, go to this page to see how to get the deal
for
the rest of us:

Note - I had a few problems at Step 3 where clicking on the download
link
just took me to another German page. I eventually worked out what to
do.
If you have the same trouble, I'll try to assist.

Brian,
Thanks for the link. They seem to have a download for Color Efex Pro
3.0 as well.
-Adam
Silver Efex Pro (1.0) also supports Aperture.
Color Efex Pro 3 is only for Lightroom.
The instructions work and I've downloaded and registered both now. The
Nik site now thinks I'm German, so I have to keep telling it to talk
to me in English. No big deal. :-)
Maybe that was why I downloaded Color Efex Pro even though I already had
it installed in Photoshop. I do have Lightroom 3 on my laptop.
I have never gotten around to using it. It (Lightroom) was kind of
off-putting when I first installed it and it tried to catalog *EVERY*
image file on my laptop.
