A Gedankenexperiment . . .
1. Should Pentax build a FF? (Business model decision.) I care because I am
invested in Pentax gear, I am comfortable with it, and hate the thought of
wading through the myriad other choices if I were to need to switch. I would
have no need to switch as long as I have a K-5 and/or a K-5ii since either
gives me good enough performance. But some day the bodies will fail, and I
would like there to be a Pentax body to move to. So I hope Pentax makes good
business decisions, stays active in the DSLR arena, and continues to provide me
occasional new toys. But a FF?
2. If Pentax builds a FF, should I, would I, buy one? (Personal decision.) This
is where the Gedankenexperiment comes in.
a. Assume that a Pentax MZ-D, LX-D, or whatever it may be called will have the
following characteristics:
i. a gazillion megapixels. Large files.
ii. high resolution.
iii. low light, high ISO, performance at least as good as the K-5.
iiii. automatic recognition of DA lenses with less than FF image
circle, and corresponding (option to request) use of an APS-C sized portion of
the sensor to avoid vignetting.
b. My long lenses would have a wider effective FOV, so I would need to get even
longer lenses and/or tele-extenders to get the performance I now have.
c. Or I would crop the wider images to achieve the same effective FOV. Which
means I am giving up the FF magic.
d. I could shot wider with my wide lenses.
e. but I don't use Wide all that often.
f. and I would need more storage, more/faster RAM. Probably a new system. Maybe
a whole new work flow.
g. So why would I need to buy FF?
3. I probably would anyway, depending on price, but am having trouble finding a
compelling reason to do it and several reasons not to.
