Quoting "Daniel J. Matyola" <[email protected]>:

I need to move my old general photography blog and my diner blog. I
also want to finally put up a travel blog that I have been working on
for years. The photo blog would involve just images and captions, the
diner blog images plus relatively short paragraphs of text, and the
travel blog will be mostly text with a few images.

What are people here using that they like and recommend?

I'm only an occasional blogger - I've done two travel blogs so far for a couple of road trips around Australia. The blogs take the place of post cards to let family and friends know where we are and what we're seeing, but their most useful purpose has been to form the basis of travel books that I put together after the trips were over. My next blog will cover a road trip that my family and I will be undertaking next year to the western USA.

The blogging platform that I use is the free wordpress.com (not to be confused with wordpress.org, which is not free and which is primarily designed to be used in conjunction with a self hosted website).

Wordpress.com does everything I need and there is a reasonable range of templates available. The only downside to the free version is that ads appear on the blog entries, but you can purchase an 'ad-free' add-on that I will probably use for the USA trip.

I haven't used any other blog platforms but I've just set up a blogger account which I plan to experiment with - just to see if it has any advantages over wordpress.

Here's the wordpress blog for our trip last year. In retrospect, the template I used is pretty bland and I'll be using something different next time:
