Virtually all of my insect shots are taken on a Slik Monopod.

that's a good endorsement!

Mine is several
years old but looks more or less like this one:

It looks like the made the buttons and knobs bright red. Sheesh... no idea why
they would do that. Makes it look like a toy. (The one I have has black buttons
and knobs.)

i have the same model (black) and it's got some nice features for the price (mine was $25 used)

the spring-loaded extension is handy for quick height adjustments, and it is just about at eye-level for me (i'm 6-1); but the quick-release is not compatible with anything else (i'd like to standardize on Arca Swiss and leave a plate on my camera) and the tilt head is a bit limiting (you have to choose, by position of the plate on the camera, whether to facilitate tilting the camera angle or switching between landscape & portrait orientations)

As for a walking stick - you could use it for such and I have tried it, but I'm
not a fan of walking sticks.

i've used hiking poles for years and the ones i like are lighter weight with a much nicer grip than the Slik monopod; my oldest pair of hiking poles has a 3/8" mount for a small head, but i still haven't tried it
