you may have something very specific in mind, but since you generalized to "anything remotely like", it sounds like you may not have looked over the should of the right OS X users; OS X supports up to 16 desktops and apps can be set to assigned to specific desktops, or to remain active in all desktops; for example i launch my text editor and it remembers the 12 windows i had open in my dev desktop, and my terminal app opens there too; Aperture lives on another desktop, VNC session to home server on another (and i can drag one terminal window to the VNC desktop as needed, etc.)

currently each desktop uses all the displays, but in 10.9 one will be able to pan between desktops independently on each display
