Like Doug said. The Kirk smaller ballhead, BH-3, is adequate for K-5 + grip + 300mm lens. If you are regularly going to use a heftier system, go with the BH-1. Buy custom rather tahn generic camera plates if at all possible. RRS and Kirk both make custom plates for K-7 body without grip, which would of course fit the K-5. Kirk part # PZ-134. Their L-brackets are long out of production but still show up on eBay now and then. Neither made a standard or L plate for the K-7/5/5ii with grip: the slide out battery drawer design makes it nigh impossible to add a non-interfering L-grip and the position of the tripod mount adds its own problems.
