No way does a variable-aperture zoom stay constant until it "hits the limit." Take a 
28-200 f/3.5 to 5.6 zoom, set it to aperture priority at f/8, zoom in to 28mm, take a 
shutter-speed reading, zoom out to 200mm, take another reading. It will be at least 1 
stop longer.
