I think there have been many valid points made on all sides of this discussion,
but I tend to side with the organization’s privilege to present itself as it
sees fit. So AP can establish and enforce policies that make it seem as though
they are the last bastions of Truth, and those who work for them can go along
or get along.

However!!! Last night as I was browsing the AP newswire via my iPad ap, I came
upon a story about the celebration of the 10th anniversary for Mars’ Rover. It
was accompanied by a really fine photo of the Rover. A selfie I wondered? Or a
file shot from the time when the two Rovers were together? Or a really good
artist’s illustration? I couldn’t tell so I went into the set of images that
came with the story. No captions, no explanations.

I just did a search, found the original of the image here:
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/artwork/rover1browse.html

I don’t at all object to AP being high and mighty about digital image
processing, but they could at least be consistent and openly reveal that the
photorealistic illustration is in fact a NASA-JPL rendering and not a photo.
