i think that could work, but 1) continuously turning the focus ring would tend to both shake the camera and change the focus slightly _during_ the exposure, 2) from your description, i think that would produce more frames than you really need, and 3) ideally you move the camera, not the focus, as the effective focal length of the lens may change slightly as you focus (making the magnification change from one frame to the next)


Is there stacking software that is free or inexpensive and work
with or outside of photoshop elements 5.0?

i've only used Photoshop myself, but wikipedia has a list of focus-stacking tools; some are free, and some have trial versions:
