Re focusing - planned to focus then lock up mirror then click away as I
slowly moved the ring
thanks for the link the to the site - $30 for a year might be fine for
me. I might play around with doing the files a bit today to see what I see.

what I want to use the technique for is photographing items I'm selling on
ebay that are tiny. so I'm not looking to BLUR the background so much as
getting every tiny detail of an object nice and sharp.
Could this work if I focused on the front, say, set continuing/rapid firing
on, and turn the focusing ring of my 50 macro very slowly (with camera on
tripod of course) to get several frames to stack and then
run them through the stacking software?
i think that could work, but 1) continuously turning the focus ring would tend
to both shake the camera and change the focus slightly _during_ the exposure,
2) from your description, i think that would produce more frames than you
really need, and 3) ideally you move the camera, not the focus, as the
effective focal length of the lens may change slightly as you focus (making the
magnification change from one frame to the next)
I’ve been told that changing the focus is the way to go if less than 1:1. The
software nicely compensates for the minor changes in focal length as you change
focus through this process. A focusing rail may be needed for the greater
precision if doing something with magnification greater than life-size.

Is there stacking software that is free or inexpensive and work
with or outside of photoshop elements 5.0?
i've only used Photoshop myself, but wikipedia has a list of focus-stacking
tools; some are free, and some have trial versions:
