Have you tried using a tablet before? Be aware that you may not take to it. I'm one of those people, so far, despite a few attempts. I just can't get the hang of avoiding registering false clicks and other random errors.
i once spent a full year using a tablet instead of a mouse for all purposes (i was doing a fair amount of retouching at the time); my overall conclusions were that the pen was more awkward than a mouse for general UI purposes, and that i could achieve the same precision with a mouse (with a few aids such as click-lock); when i used both a mouse and a pen switching back and forth was a pain; note that the pressure sensitivity was never a big plus for me (i draw a lot, but i don't really "paint")
i went back to mice, though i've now been using a Kensington Expert Mouse (which is a trackball despite its name) for a few months as a new trial; it can be very precise too, and has some advantages over a mouse for drawing
