I have used Gmail for 15 years or so now after I got a very early
invite. They have a very good handle on spam avoidance, their servers
are solid and they do know what they are doing. Consider that some of
the folks who wrote the original specs for the Internet work there.
And some of the original UNIX creators also work there. If anyone
knows how to do reliable email, it's Google.

You can make Gmail even more "free" by using an IMAP-capable mailer,
like Thunderbird. If you do that you'll never see ads.

I like the Gmail browser user interface. I have chosen the "Terminal"
theme. It's high contrast black and white, fairly minimalist design,
and as a side effect: no ads there either.
