How does IMAP get along with users who insist on restricting email to
plain text only? Not accepting HTML email is part of my defense against
computer exploits.
As I remember TWC Roadrunner switched over to IMAP just before the
fiasco with their email servers being unavailable for SEVERAL MONTHS. I
don't know if the switch over to IMAP caused the problem; apparently
their login server crashed and they couldn't get it back up.
Their "tech support" telling me that "I wasn't paying for email, so I
had no reason to complain if I couldn't use my email account" was the
reason I got an Earthlink email account in the first place. It's also
the reason I'm on the list to switch to Google Fiber just as soon as it
becomes available on my street.
After more than a month of the outage, I finally managed to log into TWC
Roadrunner's webmail interface - webmail was apparently the first part
of TWC Roadrunner that could log-in (although it was hit or miss for a
while, mostly miss) - I set up a permanent forward file to send any
email that comes to my roadrunner address over to my Earthlink account.
Right now both my Yahoo & Earthlink accounts are on "pop" servers.
I looked for "Yahoo and IMAP" & for "Earthlink and IMAP" just now, and
it looks like I should be able to switch them both over. IIRC, when I
first set up those accounts, IMAP was not available.
Don't know if that would help for Earthlink, because the outgoing smtp
server is the same one I'm already using that's getting RBL problems
from "Spam Eating Monkey".

I have used Gmail for 15 years or so now after I got a very early
invite. They have a very good handle on spam avoidance, their servers
are solid and they do know what they are doing. Consider that some of
the folks who wrote the original specs for the Internet work there.
And some of the original UNIX creators also work there. If anyone
knows how to do reliable email, it's Google.
You can make Gmail even more "free" by using an IMAP-capable mailer,
like Thunderbird. If you do that you'll never see ads.
I like the Gmail browser user interface. I have chosen the "Terminal"
theme. It's high contrast black and white, fairly minimalist design,
and as a side effect: no ads there either.

I used to use Earthlink back when they were actually based in the US,
Atlanta to be exact.
When they moved Tech Support to "elsewhere" and all their techs were totally
script driven I changed to Google after trying to reactivate my Hotmail
account, who banned me for spamming, (basically sending out a notification
to my address book notifying them of my new email address). I then, because
it seemed appropriate, tried to register [email protected] but
Microsoft has no sense of humor especially when they're the butt of the
joke.
Sure Google scans my emails for key words to try and sell me something, but
that's automated and I don't do anything on email that I care if anyone else
sees. At least people running the joint are mostly competent, and the
service is "free".

I've now identified three Earthlink mail server IP addresses that are
RBL by "Spam Eating Monkey". I think "Spam Eating Monkey" must be the
service PDML uses.
All three RBL instances track back to the same idiot Earthlink "user"
spamming some other mailing list.
I spent an extended period of time on the phone with Earthlink's
"technical support" in India Friday night; a complete waste of time.
I'll make one more attempt on Monday during US business hours, but I
might be looking for another email provider ... AGAIN.
