IMAP is a post-office protocol. It doesn't care what is in your email at all, so it works just fine with plain text, rich text (MIME), HTML, or whatever you like.
Thunderbird plays well with Gmail. So does Mail.app on Macs, though I find Mail.app slow and I prefer T-bird. John, just to add to your woes: this email from you and two prior ones all ended up in the Gmail spam folder. Apparently everyone now regards Earthlink as a hopeless spam source.
