You guys don't know how lucky you are. $1200 is R22000. I could live on
that for 2 months!
What a difference. Here, it would pay Michael's and my health insurance
for one month and half a month's rent. No, we haven't rented a mansion.
A simple flat of 60 square meters (645 sq ft).

There are those of us who would say that the lucky one is the one who can
live for two months on $1200 in an area with wonderful photographic options.
As a married couple my wife and I got the full $2400. Around here that
wouldn't even pay one month's rent for a typical small apartment, which
is causing some problems among the 20% or so of the (previously) working
population who no longer have a paycheck coming in.
As a retired homeowner whose wife is still working (remotely; she hasn't
left the house for weeks) I definitely count myself among the lucky ones.
And when the lockdown ends I'll still have Yosemite, the Grand Canyon,
and several other national parks within driving distance.
I can live for ONE month on $1,200. Combined Social Security & Army Retired Pay
comes to just about $1,800 a month, with net after taxes being $1,200.
I don't have to pay much taxes, but with the combined Social Security & Retired
Pay my income *is* above the threshold.
I got enough of my kitchen finished before the lockdown came that I can cook.
And I have kitchen cabinets to store food in. The only real changes in my life
are a couple of weekly club meetings I used to attend are suspended for the
duration and I'm having to make a grocery list so I don't forget anything during
my once-a-month shopping.
I have a roof over my head & like you, I know the Grand Canyon & other National
Parks will be there when we're allowed to go about our business again.
But true happiness ...
I went outdide a while ago to do some yard work. True happiness is the
expression on my little dog's face when I come back in the front door.
That other stuff is just money. Can't take it with you, and even if you could,
it would probably burn.
