That can happen with most shoe-mount flashes. Even the old Vivitar 283/285 workhorses were weak at the shoe. However, you could get replacement shoes for them. There is/was even a metal replacement shoe for the Vivitars.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the shoe is replaceable on my AF500FTZ. It looks like it would have to be a factory repair job if it broke. I guess I'll have to give it a close examination to see if I can find and signs of cracks or weakening. I suspect cumulative damage of some sort chose that instant to make it snap. Bad luck. I'm sure you had a working spare with you. I wonder about the Metz shoe-mount flashes. Are their shoes replaceable? I've only owned the potato masher styles, so I don't know about their shoe-mount flashes.
