yes i found some of these explanations a little confusing in this regard too
i prefer to refer to part center to part center spacing
i suppose we could reopen the entire dialog now WRT part center to part center when the parts are arranged vertically instead of horizontally as has been discussed

Dennis or others, What exactly are you measuring, center to center or edge to edge? By the comments I would have to think center to center spacing but just wanted to confirm that (i.e. 35 mils = bridges. I would think so!).
Dennis, the main issue is the PnP head's diameter or width. In our case we have an older PnP machine and we are forced to use 30 mils part edge to part edge strictly because of the PnP head diameter of 0.060". You don't want the head to collide with adjacent parts that were already placed. We should probably allow just a little bit more but that gets to expensive on board realty and it is a pain for placement grid.

thanks Kat i don't know where these will be built (yet)
i'm sure these numbers are all over the place
what sort of spacings have you seen w/ modern machines ?
i've done stencil/solder paste with hand placement at 50 mil center to center (side by side) and didn't hear any squawking
i have a spot where 40 would be nice :)

Yeah, 50 mil is about the smallest I go for hand, had one board house in AU who could do 35 mil but it was tight and had alot of issues with solder bridges :( so now I mainly stick to 50mil

Kat.
