My $0.02 : 1) Don't overlook bad RAM or other hardware problems. memtest-86 should be run on a machine overnight to detect possible RAM or motherboard problems (bad or weak capacitors, etc.). This happens more often than you think. 2) Don't have a bunch of background utilities running: Norton AV and other stuff like it is notorious for making Windows crashy. True anecdote: my stepmother was a Norton fan (AV, taskbar hider, firewall, crash recovery, you name it) until her AutoCAD workstation was hit by an awesome spyware attack last year. I was called in to resurrect that machine. I had to take some extreme measures; that computer was in surgery for 36 hours. But when I was finished, she had a new W2K install, all her data was salvaged, and the machine was much faster and stable than it had ever been before. It turns out that the Norton stuff had made it run like crap. Yes, even before the spyware came it had run like crap. 3) Find and get rid of spyware. Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware are 2 free and good spyware removal tools. Use them.
