Gary R., List: GR: 'Tychism' and 'Pragmatism' in a synthesis named 'Synechism? What could that mean?
This is an intriguing question, and I suspect that the answer hinges on what exactly we take Peirce to have meant by "pragmatism" in that particular context. Just a few paragraphs earlier, he stated that "the verso of the sheet of Existential Graphs represents a universe of possibilities. This, taken in connection with other premisses, led me back to the same conclusion to which my studies of Pragmatism had already brought me, the reality of some possibilities" (CP 4.581; 1906). That echoes his assertion elsewhere that "it is the reality of some possibilities that pragmaticism is most concerned to insist upon," which appears within a paragraph explaining that besides Critical Common-Sensism, "[a]nother doctrine which is involved in Pragmaticism as an essential consequence of it ... is the scholastic doctrine of realism" (CP 5.453, EP 2:354; 1905). Accordingly, it seems to me that the equation being proposed by Peirce in CP 4.584 is tychism + (scholastic) realism = synechism. Again, (objective) idealism follows from both synechism (cf. R 936:3; c. 1891 and CP 6.101; 1902) and tychism (cf. CP 6.102, EP 1:312; 1892) to complete the metaphysical picture.
