Bernard, List,

That was a picture off the web, but I was able to find our actual copy —
the Lockdown (shades of Das Schloss!) has given us a chance to unpack
a few boxes of books — and the front matter gives credit for the cover
to René Magritte, “Castle of the Pyrenees”, courtesy Harry Torczyner.

Regards,

Jon

Ha!

Our copy of Kafka's “Castle”, which Sue has read umpteen times
but I've never been able to get to the end of, has Magritte's
“Sense of Reality” (a phrase from Freud, I think) on the cover,
except it has an image of a castle topping it all off (attached).
I do not know if Magritte himself ever created such a variant.
At any rate, I think that pretty sums up this entire discussion.

Like I said before ...

To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:
A time for building castles in the stratosphere,
A time to mind the anti-gravs that keep us here.

P.S. I have reprised an old subject line from my first days on the List.

List,

I think that one of the main misunderstandings about Peirce's thought comes from the meaning of "Real" in his philosophical way of thinking.

This is certainly also thrue of the nature of token, sign and representamen.

In place of the old, often recurring debates on this subject I propose to muse over a painting from René Magritte entitled "Le sens des réalités" (see attached file)

I risk a translation with "The sense of realities" and think that Magritte was
truly peircian while probably ignoring it.
