Sean mentioned that he was surprised that I was invited to GMU. Sandra
Peart and David Levy, who ran the conference, are both very
conservative, but both are open to dialogue. There were others at the
conference who were extremely helpful in helping me strengthen my
argument. Since then Gavin Kennedy has gone out of his way to help me.

I don't think that I would have been invited by a Chicago crowd & I
certainly would not have gotten as polite a reception.

When I was in grad school, I was running an environmental session in
Chicago at the American Association for the Advancement of Science
meetings. Someone in the back of the room spoke up for the entrepreneur
as an endangered species. I later met with him -- David Friedman's son
-- & enjoyed the encounter. I went to his apartment the next day to
talk further with him. I stopped by again on a later visit to Chicago.
He seemed unlike the typical Chicago personality -- you know, the smirk
when they have the correct ideological response.

After David became recognized in his own right, he never spoke to me. I
assume that he recognized me at the meetings, but never acknowledge it.

Anyway, I think that the GMU spirit is very different from Chicago.
Although I should mention that I have had some very warm exchanges with
Lester Telser, who seems to be an outsider at Chicago. Gene Coyle has
also exchanged with Lester.
