I'll echo Matt and Michael here. Here's how I met Don. I had written a
paper for the Easterns very critical of the claim, on the part of Don and
others (McCloskey, eg) that there was a special affinity between
hermeneutics and libertarian economics. The title was "Hermeneutics and
Libertarian Economics: Odd Couple?" When I got the panel assignment, I saw
that Don was the discussant and prepared for the worst. In the event, he
loved the paper and urged me to send it to Critical Review. We became
friends. I spoke to his management students about Hannah Arendt and later
gave a talk on Smith in a speaker series run by the economics
department. I gave him the Arendt bug and we organized a session at the
Easterns on Arendt and Economics. One of the things he was working on at
the time of his death involved Arendt.
He was inspiring, challenging, passionate about ideas. If all libertarians
were like him, I think I would have to become one, too! I also miss him
dearly
