But the original topic was Rove giving advice to Barack Obama about whether
declaring victory would "make him look arrogant" and "alienate" Hillary Clinton
voters, thereby making them more likely to support McCain. That doesn't really
sound much like psephology to me - it's more in the nature of political gut
feel than detailed analysis of precincts. And on the question of strategy, I
think Michael has a point that the Rove legacy is a) quite mixed in terms of
his actual success rate and b) associated with quite a few rather smelly
allegations of push-polling and other dirty tricks.

(Added to that is the fact that Rove's behaviour with respect to the 2006
elections surely has to call into question either his psephological judgement
or his candour; he was saying right up until the end that the Republicans would
squeak a victory, and not just in public statements apparently. Without
wanting to disparage the noble profession of stockbroking, one has to be *very*
*very* careful of people who are excellent analysts with huge amounts of
knowledge, who continually feed you good information and analysis because one
day it is quite likely that they are going to end up with economic interests
which are not in line with your own, and if you take their statements at face
value you will have cause for empathy with chickens who never get anything but
the best grain from the stockhand, right up until the day when he wrings their
neck).
