These two points perfectly summarise my disappointment and fear. We are witness to the largest mass gathering (both for the campaign and the celebration of its success) ... but brought together and motivated by, in aid of, what? Is there more than words such as "change", "hope" and the triumph of a leader with the carefully cultivated personality and politics? The answer (to the question: is there more?) seems to be a fairly certain "no". For within the period of an election campaign, we have (or seem to believe we have) gone from "We shall overcome, one day" to "At last (my love has come along)".

The comparison to Reagan's imagery seems appropriate. He too equated his triumph to a new morning in America where "the skies above are so blue". There is a difference though: Reagan's arrival was the genuine achievement of a resurgent right wing. Obama's is ... exactly what? I am not even sure.
