It shouldn't be so confusing. Just as commodity-producing labor has a dual, contradictory, character embodied in the commodity--material transformation (concrete) and value-enhancment (abstract); so does labor power in that exercise have a dual, contradictory character-- productive activity (concrete) and source of surplus-value (abstract).
