KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 -- The federal government Wednesday blamed the
Kelantan government for the pollution of Kelantan River.
Deputy Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk S.
Sothinathan said uncontrolled logging and mining as well as
deforestation near the source of the river contributed to the
pollution.
The state government had issued a large number of mining licences, he
said when winding up the debate for the ministry on the Supply Bill
2007 in the Dewan Rakyat.
Sothinathan said miners usually cleared their concession areas by
felling trees before digging for gold, and this resulted in the
pollution of the river.
The federal government, therefore, sought the cooperation of the
state government in checking pollution of the river, he added.
Sothinathan said the government, through the National Forestry
Council, had established several guidelines and regulations that must
be adhered to with regard to government and private land, including
land approved for mining.
On illegal logging, he said four such cases were detected in
permanent forest reserves in Peninsular Malaysia in the first quarter
of this year.
"However, encroachment was not detected in the permanent forest
reserve in Kelantan in 2005 and in the first quarter of this year,"
he added.//Bernama
