If it’s that old and still seems stable you may just consider leaving it alone.
The cellulose that the hornets make the nest out of is pretty thin. JTV

Thank you for all this help. How does the procedure work? I know that this nest
is at least 60 years old, so I will look out for white dust if it has any (we
haven't moved it yet). This tells me that there is no need to freeze it because
we are fairly certain nothing is living in there.

Could I spray this on and this would be sufficient? Would I need insulation
foam if it's indoors?

Great stuff is a foam insulation in a can. Any spray can clear coat should work
it may darken it a shade. I only used the clear coat because I was putting it
outside. Do not overfill with the expansion foam or get it on the outside of
the nest. If this is new I would freeze it for a few days so larvae do not
hatch if you don’t know how the kill was done. JTV

We are not sure how it was obtained. The founder of the historic home picked it
up. I have heard of Krylon for preserving this, but what is great stuff
expansion foam? Do I use both Great Stuff expansion foam and matte clear coat?
I would be very interested in ways to preserve this

Thank you so much for your help.

Hornets nest. How was it obtained? If you notice white dust falling out of it
that would be a pesticide dust FYI. I have preserved these with great stuff
expansion foam....do not get it on your skin...and sprayed with matte clear
coat and it has held up for years. JTV

Hi All,

I'm researching ways to treat this object, but I am not sure if this is a wasp
nest or a hornets nest. Understanding this will help me better treat the object.

Thank you so much! Looking forward to your responses.
