I will also add a vote for the Dino lite. We inherited a Dino-Lite Pro Digital
Microscope, model AM413T-FVW2, which has a UV function. That might be too much
for pest ID, but it’s a great tool to have in the lab.

Our Dino Lite also came to us with a stand, and it’s very handy. Our stand is
limited to vertical movement only, but you can purchase horizontal arms
separately, which might be nice when examining sticky traps. I found a stand
similar to ours on Amazon for $99.00, but it looks like they also sell
gooseneck versions which might be better than the more rigid stand shown in the
link below:

Adding a vote for Dino-lite. It's what we've been using and it's a great help.

I use model AM3111, it's about $150.

Hi All,

I love this idea and I wonder if anyone can put forward and actual USB
microscope brand and model that they recommend in the $200.00 or under range?
Hoping to squeak this into my IPM budget which is due soon. Thanks!

Hi,

I’ll just second and third a simple, inexpensive handheld or USB microscope.
The type that attach to your tablet or phone are nice too. Each has its
advantages. I found the USB on a stand (that most come with) get the best,
steady images.

Best,
Matt

Hi Lexi,

I can recommend the simple usb microscope I have used for the past year; an
8megapixel «Oitez e-scope». It has a 200x zoom and captures images and video to
your computer (and possibly tablet). Cost about $150.

Best regards,

Med vennlig hilsen

There are inexpensive microscopes that attach to your mobile phone, computer or
(probably) tablet. I am starting to experiment with one to see if it works for
this (and other purposes). That would also give you the option of getting a
good photograph. Even a “toy” one could work. One with a built in light would
be best.

Hi all,

Is there a relatively inexpensive resource for examining insects for better
detection? Could I get a link for one if possible? I used a magnifying glass
and I suppose that was not enough to fully examine these insects.

Thank you for your help.

EXTERNAL SENDER

Hello everyone,

I tried to get some magnified images of pests I found in a glue trap in our
museum's archive. They are attached to this message. Is there any insect here
that should bring cause for alarm vis a vis the collections?

Sincerely,
