Hi Adam and Pestlisters,

I've been using the VERY budget-friendly ($43) and wireless (very techy!) model
here:
https://www.amazon.com/Microscope-Magnification-Inspection-Compatible-Smartphone/dp/B07PVMRZQH/ref=sr_1_14?keywords=usb+microscope+with+stand&qid=1570806264&s=electronics&sr=1-14

I have a mobile trap check set up with a small cart/trolley (and everything I
need) to check our 156 department traps over six floors and have recently
switched out a clunky, old-school, hand-me-down microscope for this digital
number after seeing 'hobby' digital scopes suggested on the Pestlist emails.

This model connects to a laptop with a USB cord, but I use it wirelessly with
an old android tablet I had that's too old for anything else useful. It also
connects to all wifi phones. I leave the scope and tablet on and set up on my
trolley as I go around to easily and quickly check any teeny pests without
bringing my face oh so close to the larger pests bunking with the smalls when I
used a hand lens, or getting tricky glue boards royally stuck in the old
microscope. It can also capture video as well as photos for ID questions! It
also doubles in public engagement events where I let the kiddos look at
feathers and bird feet with it. A big hit for sure and not a catastrophe if
something happens to it.

For those with a small IPM budget, I can't recommend it enough!

I hope this helps someone!

Cheers,
Bentley

Hi All,

I love this idea and I wonder if anyone can put forward and actual USB
microscope brand and model that they recommend in the $200.00 or under range?
Hoping to squeak this into my IPM budget which is due soon. Thanks!

Adam

Hi,

I’ll just second and third a simple, inexpensive handheld or USB microscope.
The type that attach to your tablet or phone are nice too. Each has its
advantages. I found the USB on a stand (that most come with) get the best,
steady images.

Best,
Matt

Hi Lexi,

I can recommend the simple usb microscope I have used for the past year; an
8megapixel «Oitez e-scope». It has a 200x zoom and captures images and video to
your computer (and possibly tablet). Cost about $150.

Best regards,

Med vennlig hilsen

There are inexpensive microscopes that attach to your mobile phone, computer or
(probably) tablet. I am starting to experiment with one to see if it works for
this (and other purposes). That would also give you the option of getting a
good photograph. Even a “toy” one could work. One with a built in light would
be best.

Hi all,

Is there a relatively inexpensive resource for examining insects for better
detection? Could I get a link for one if possible? I used a magnifying glass
and I suppose that was not enough to fully examine these insects.

Thank you for your help.

Hello everyone,

I tried to get some magnified images of pests I found in a glue trap in our
museum's archive. They are attached to this message. Is there any insect here
that should bring cause for alarm vis a vis the collections?
